Southern Nevada Health District Receives Prestigious Grant for Pool Safety Initiatives
Recognizing excellence in the field of pool and spa safety, the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) awarded the coveted 2025 Dr. R. Neil Lowry Grant to the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) in Las Vegas, NV. This accolade was presented during the PHTA Awards of Excellence Reception at the International Pool Spa Patio Expo in Las Vegas on October 21, 2025.
The grant honors the legacy of Dr. Robert Neil Lowry, a vital member of PHTA who was instrumental in advancing recreational water safety standards. SNHD distinguished itself by significantly contributing to public health and safety in aquatic environments through educational and technical initiatives. The $5,000 funding aims to further bolster their groundbreaking public safety programs across Clark County’s extensive network of pool facilities.
Enhancing Pool Safety through Risk Factor Surveys
Serving the Las Vegas metropolitan area and surrounding municipalities, the Southern Nevada Health District oversees over 5,000 aquatic venues. Since 2024, SNHD has effectively implemented risk factor surveys assessing the safety framework of pool sites, focusing on lifeguard staffing, bather management, equipment functionality, and effective water treatment systems.
These surveys not only nurture collaborative relationships between inspectors and pool operators but also contribute to a safer swimming experience by mitigating violations and pool closures. The proactive approach nurtures innovation within the community’s pool safety protocols, ensuring elevated standards in public health protection.
Expanding Safety Initiatives with Grant Funding
With the grant, SNHD plans to deepen the scope of its risk factor surveys to facilitate comprehensive data analysis, instrumental in refining training materials for industry stakeholders. This initiative will also enhance communication with aquatic facilities, ultimately elevating safety standards across the region.
Justin Wiley, PHTA Vice President of Government Relations, Standards, and Codes, lauded SNHD’s commitment. “Their risk factor survey initiative has set a new benchmark in pool safety, improving bather health while enhancing cooperation among pool operators and inspectors. PHTA is thrilled to endorse this program, aiming to better the aquatic experiences for local communities.”
